Close the Deal - Get the Money
Once the deal is made its time to collect payment and confirm the pickup or make
shipping arrangements with the buyer. Beware, there are lots of scams on the
internet and even on the local level. I have had a bad bank certified check, my bank
tells me they have received several. It’s important to limit your liability! If
someone drives away in the car you just sold, and has an accident, you can be
liable if you don’t do the paperwork right. In all states open titles are illegal (this is
a title that is not filled out to the buyer). If you do not fill the title out to the buyer,
the car is still in your name. Make sure you do the following
1. Complete a Bill of Sale.
2. Ensure Mileage is on the Bill Of Sale
3. Fill out all blank areas on the title.
· If your sale is on-line I recommend payment by wire transfer. Only take
payment to your bank account from the US Federal Reserve. Your bank
is a member and any buyers bank is a member. When the funds are in
your account it’s a 100% safe. Do not take Money Grams, like Western
Union, this is the way lots of scammers like to pay because there is no
way to track. Do not take payments by escrow accounts, its sounds safe,
but can be a big scam.
· Payment the Old School way is safe “cash”, go buy a pen at Wal-Mart
that checks for counterfeit money.
· With payment by check it is important to wait until the check clears
your bank before releasing the car.
· Payment by Pay Pal sounds good, but the fees are high. EBAY owns Pay
Pal so they encourage payment through them. I take up to $500 deposit by Pay Pal.
All you need to open a Pay Pal account is an email address, PayPal is also great for small
internet purchases.
· Check with your state DMV on the laws in your state about title transfer. (Check out our page on dealing with the DMV in your state)
Regardless fill out a Bill Of Sale and the title completely.
· If you sold on-line it’s the buyers responsibility to pick the car up or have it
shipped. I use a large company, McNutt Auto Transport Service
1-800-755-2324, EBAY Motors also recommends some
companies.
· Finally, remember to contact your insurance company to cancel your
insurance policy.
